Don and I went to Welland to look after Lilly and Evy one weekend in May, when we can home we had a great surprise on our terrace. It seems that a mystery bird had laid an egg in one of our planters. So being inquisitive as I am, I took it upon myself to explore the internet to find out what species of bird had taken a liking to our planter. Well after about two hours of looking at pictures of eggs I still was no closer to solving the mystery. The following day we went off to work and low and behold when we got home we checked the planter and wouldn't you know it, there were two eggs.
The following morining I happened to look out my bedroom window I have a good view of the planter from there and to my great surprise, there, sitting on the eggs in the planter, was a duck. Yes you heard me right, a duck!!!! The next week proved to be very eventful, and every day our lady duck layed another egg, until yesterday when we checked we now have 9 duck eggs in the planter.
Don, being the animal person he is, is now able to give our new friend, we call her Daphnie, food and water and she doesn't even move a feather. I know what your thinking, she will never leave if we keep this up. Well, I have contacted Ducks Unlimited and they advised me that we definately should not feed Daphnie, or the babies once they hatch. Ducks are sure funny liitle birds, she is so content just sitting on her nest all day long, she leaves the nest between 6 and 8 PM every evening, I'm sure to stretch, eat and do whatever else it is that ducks do at night, and then there she is back on the nest by 5:30 every morning.
So now we just sit and wait to see what happens next. I understand that ducks will lay up to 14 eggs in their nests, oh my goodness I hope she isn't that fertile. We will keep you all posted on the progress of Daphnie's family, so watch and learn along with us.
